Staff at Specsavers Brecon have been inspiring the next generation of opticians and audiologists at schools and career fairs in Wales and England.
Opening young eyes to a different career
Hannah Shepherd, dispensing optician, spent time discussing career options and eye health with 80 pupils at Brecon High School. She has also run interactive workshops for thousands of students at the annual Builth Wells career festival and the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham.
By teaching students about the importance of eye health and the various optical and audiology roles available, and providing fun and interactive demonstrations of key equipment, she hopes to open their eyes to an often forgotten career path.
Changing lives through eye care
‘Optometry is often overlooked as a healthcare career choice, particularly by students interested in STEM subjects, and we are determined to try to change that,’ says Mrs Shepherd.
‘Sight is vital to everything we do and eye care professionals play a key role in caring for our sight. Eye tests don’t just pick up eye health problems, they can often pick up other health conditions such as high blood pressure, cancer and diabetes.’
