Braintree local Alex Miller has been selected as the Facebook favourite finalist in Specsavers’ search for Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2017.
The 27-year-old structural glazier from Silver End was chosen from thousands of entries. Alex is now in the running to win the national Spectacle Wearer of the Year award and could take away the grand prize of £10,000.
Through to the finals
He said: ‘I entered the competition when I saw it on Facebook. It was a great surprise to find out I was the Facebook favourite voted by the public to go through to the finals.
‘I’ve been wearing glasses since I was in primary school and kids were always calling me things like four-eyes. I didn’t wear them much in secondary school but I’ve got a piece of my optic nerve missing in my left eye, so I needed them when I was learning to drive and later when I started working.’
Retail director of Specsavers Braintree, Mike Bromidge, said: ‘Alex would make a great Spectacle Wearer of the Year, he’s charming and wears his glasses with pride.’
Alex is one of thousands of proud glasses wearers from every corner of the UK and Ireland who have been entering this year’s event by sending in specs selfies to their local Specsavers store.
The competition, which has been running for the last 22 years, aims to celebrate wearing glasses with pride and every entry raises £1 for Kidscape. To date, nearly £400,000 has been raised for the charity.
‘Embrace wearing your glasses'
When asked if he had any advice for other glasses wearers, Alex said: ‘Embrace wearing your glasses as much as you can. These days they’re quite fashionable, so they can be both functional and an accessory. So, don’t worry about it, just crack on!’
Alex will now join the other finalists at the celeb-packed awards ceremony at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on 10 October, where he will get the opportunity to meet former Girls Aloud star, Nadine Coyle.
