Kenneth Banfield from Helston was not only awarded the neighbour of the year title in the 2017 Pirate FM Local Hero Awards, sponsored by Specsavers Bodmin, but also the winner of winners at the annual awards ceremony!
Beyond the call of duty
The deserving winner was nominated by single mum of three young children, Clare Baxter. When Clare was travelling to Plymouth every day to train as a midwife, Kenneth stepped in like any good neighbour, grazing the Guinea pigs and feeding the chicken when she was late home.
Soon enough 79 year old Kenneth was picking up the milk, putting out the bins, doing the DIY and making sure Clare’s children got to school. He was even there when Clare went into labour with her fourth child.
Well done from Specsavers Bodmin!
Jo McLean, store director of sponsors Specsavers Bodmin said: ‘There’s no doubt Kenneth’s selfless acts made him a deserving winner and I was delighted to be there to hand over the trophy.’
