South Belfast girl Victoria Bingham is a regional finalist in this year’s annual Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition.

Victoria, who is a medical scientist, was voted as a winner in the Northern Ireland 35-44 age category and will now go forward to the next round of judging, competing against finalists from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales for a place in the prestigious final.

Overall winner secures £10,000

Former Girls Aloud star Nadine Doyle from Derry will host the star-studded awards ceremony which takes place at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on 10 October when one overall winner will walk away with a cash prize of £10,000 and the coveted title Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2017.

Victoria was rewarded with a bottle of champagne, a certificate and a £150 Specsavers voucher, which were presented to her by optometrist Matthew McKenny, store director at Specsavers in Park Centre.

I love my specs

Victoria said, ‘I only started wearing glasses four years ago. My research work at Queen’s University means I do a lot of close-up reading and scientific analysis on computers and I now need specs to help aid me with my job.’

‘I really took to wearing glasses almost immediately and now I love the look and have several different styles and frame colours. I decided to enter the Specsavers competition just for fun but of course I’m delighted to get through to this stage and would like to wish the other regional finalists the very best of luck.’

Funds for Kidscape

Specsavers will donate £1 for each entry made to anti-bullying charity Kidscape. Over the past six years the competition has raised more than £400,000 for Kidscape.
