At the beginning of the year, 29 optometry students from the University of Hertfordshire started pre-registration (pre-reg) placements with Specsavers.
Joining them was Krishan Shah, who jumped at the chance for a placement at Specsavers in Barnet having been set on a career in optometry since the age of ten.
He said: ‘It may sound a bit cliché, but I knew I wanted to be an optometrist as soon as I had my first eye test. I managed to secure some work experience at Specsavers in North Finchley when I was 15 years old, and I haven’t looked back really.’
Krishan’s opportunity came as a result of Specsavers’ collaboration with the University, which has now integrated the pre-reg year into its four-year Master of Optometry programme for the first time.
‘I always knew I wanted to study optometry, but the fact that I can learn so much while studying is just fantastic. I had previously been working on Saturdays as an optical assistant anyway, but this is far more in depth and really does put me on the right path when I graduate next summer. It’s exactly what I wanted it to be,’ said the student.
Great addition to the team
Pragna Raghwani, director, dispensing and contact lens optician at the store, added: We are delighted to have Krishan with us, he has made a great start. The team are really supportive and we look forward to watching his development throughout the rest of the year and beyond.’
About the programme
Specsavers’ pre-reg programme is widely recognised as the industry-leading benefit from seven days of courses throughout the placement, including a comprehensive induction, workshops, assessment preparation and mock exams.
This year’s students will be the first year-group to graduate from the University of Hertfordshire’s Master of Optometry course, in summer 2019. They will leave as registered optometrists, eligible for full registration with the General Optical Council.
