Bangor Grammar’s 1st XV rugby team got a chance to lift some coveted silverware recently, however, not on the pitch this time.
The team, who are currently preparing for the Schools Cup Championship, welcomed the Guinness PRO12 Trophy to the school ahead of the Ulster v Cardiff Blues match thanks to Specsavers Bangor.
The senior 1st XV team were first to get their hands on the trophy when it arrived at the school, with many commenting that they’d love to lift it in real life when playing for Ulster in the future. The trophy attracted many rugby players throughout the junior and senior school who got to lift the trophy for a taste of glory, including many of the PE department’s staff!
As an official sponsor of the Guinness PRO12 match officials and referees, Specsavers is also the official optician and hearing services partner of the Guinness PRO12, providing expert eye care for players and officials, ensuring no ‘should’ve gone to Specsavers’ moments on the pitch.
Protecting eyes on and off the pitch
Andrea Ridgway, store director at the Specsavers in Bloomfield Shopping Centre, Bangor joined the trophy for a visit to Bangor Grammar and chatted with some of the team, who do wear glasses off the pitch, about what they wear on the pitch. Andrea said; ‘A few players on the senior team wear glasses off the pitch, so I was able to chat with them about what their options are for making sure they can see everything while on the pitch too. It is important these young players know how to protect their sight playing contact sports like rugby, and hopefully they’ll keep the advice with them over the years.’
