The 2017 Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition is underway and Specsavers in Banbridge is encouraging glasses wearers to prove their specs appeal by entering the popular UK and Ireland wide competition. £10,000 cash will be awarded to the overall winner.

Local man Derek Dubery won through to last October’s Grand Final in London and was voted the UK and Ireland’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2016.

‘I had a fantastic evening in London meeting top specs wearing celebrities including Twiggy, Louis Walsh, Nadine Coyle and cast members from TOWIE. It was such a surprise to win the top award. I would thoroughly recommend entering the competition.’

Nadine is this year’s specs ambassador

Crowned Best Specs Newcomer at the 2016 awards former Girls Aloud band member Nadine Coyle has taken on the role of Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2017 ambassador and is encouraging specs wearers aged 16 and over to take a selfie and enter the competition.

Over £400,00 raised for Kidscape to date

Wayne Watson, store director at the Banbridge store says, ‘We’re asking glasses wearers in the Banbridge region to enter by sharing their best selfie. It’s a great opportunity for people to show off their personal specs style and each entry helps to raise funds for anti-bullying charity Kidscape.’

Specsavers will donate £1 per entry and monies raised will support the charity in providing training, support and advice for children, parents and schools. The competition has generated more than £400,000 for Kidscape over the past six years.

Five age categories

There are five age categories – 16-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-59 and over 60s. A Facebook favourite will also be voted for by the public. Each category winner receives a VIP makeover and will mingle with celebrities at the gala awards night held in London during October.
