Local people with minor eye conditions will now be able to visit the Specsavers store in Arnold for diagnosis, thanks to a new service which has recently launched in-store.

Eye problems, such as dry eye, red eye or visual disturbance, can now be diagnosed and quickly treated by the store’s specially trained opticians, as part of its Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS). This new level of eyecare reduces the need for residents to visit their GP or local hospital, providing a hassle-free alternative to accessing services for eye health.

A word from the store director

Specsavers Arnold store director, Vineet Nehra, said: ‘I am delighted that we can now offer this enhanced level of service for eye health. We have the skills, equipment and qualified staff to ensure that patients are quickly assessed and treated or referred to hospital for any serious problems. Minor eye conditions can cause irritation and discomfort, so it’s great that local people will now be able to access help conveniently on the high street.’

Investing in services for eye health
A MECS check-up will need to be booked separately with an accredited optician and costs £22. It is just one of the new services that Specsavers in Arnold is now able to offer, after the store recently invested in cutting-edge 3D scanning technology, usually only found in hospital eye departments.

The store’s new Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine allows optometrists to view the eye in greater detail by producing a complete structural scan, including layers of the eye not normally visible in traditional eye testing techniques. This level of diagnostic capability allows clinicians to identify diseases years earlier than traditional methods, as well as screen and manage conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

Monitoring eye health over time
An OCT scan can be booked in addition to a standard eye test for £10 and is not covered by the NHS examination. The scan only takes a few seconds, is non-contact and painless, and can be requested at the time of booking an eye test or when you arrive in store for an appointment.

Your OCT images will be stored on file, so we can help note changes over time – a real benefit to the monitoring of your overall eye health.
