Antrim basketball player Conor McDonnell has scored a sponsorship ‘basket’ with new support from local store Specsavers. The 15-year-old St Malachy’s College student has just returned from a tournament in Luxembourg, his second test series as a member of the U15 Ireland Boys Basketball Squad.
Antrim Specsavers Store Director Davin Quinn explains: ‘Conor has been an optical customer of ours since we opened 5 years ago. We not only provide his daily eyewear but we also have special sports glasses made for him. Conor is playing basketball at a very high level and as such he needs both optimum visual acuity and a safe pair of glasses.
'His sports frames have thicker edges with cushioning on the nose and a rubber strap which keeps them firm against his head. The lenses are made of toughened plastic rather than glass which could possibly shatter on impact.
'We have watched Conor come up through the local and national basketball ranks and are delighted to have been able to support his sporting success with a contribution towards his expenses.’
Conor is a member of St Malachy’s College U16 team who are current Ireland and Northern Ireland Champions. He is also a member of the club team, Belfast Star, who are current Northern Ireland Champions and All Ireland runners up. In April 2017 Conor represented Ireland against Wales and in July he travelled to Luxembourg to take part in a five game series.
Grateful to Specsavers
Thanking Specsavers Conor said: ‘I am very grateful to Specsavers for their support. All of our travelling and expenses is self-funded so the contribution from Specsavers is much appreciated.
'I have thoroughly enjoyed playing with the Ireland team at U15 level and am hoping that with continued hard work and training that I can be selected for the U16 squad which will compete in the European Championships next year.’
