Ita Armour, who has been store manager of Specsavers in Antrim since 2012, has further enhanced her customer offer with a special new hearing qualification. Following eighteen months of study and examinations Ita has attained a BTEC Level 4 Diploma and is now a fully qualified hearing clinician.
Extensive hearcare expertise
Ita explains, ‘I’ve always had jobs which involved working with the public. My role in Specsavers to date has been particularly rewarding as what we do is a great mix of eye healthcare and providing stylish solutions for all ages. Whilst everyone knows about Specsavers eye care offering people are often surprised to learn about our extensive hear care expertise. I became more and more interested in this aspect especially working alongside our audiologist Joanne Torrens at our in-store hearing clinic.’
Specialist hearing training
‘The opportunity came up to do the specialist hearing training and I began the journey in 2015. It was fairly challenging with numerous week long courses in Dublin, ongoing online tuition and final written and practical exams in Birmingham but I was delighted to complete it all successfully.’
‘I now have my dream job. Nothing beats the feeling of achievement when someone tells you that you have given them their life back once they’re fitted with hearing aids for the first time. I look after all the hear care roles in-store from pre-screening to fitting hearing aids and providing the full range of repairs and after-care services. I especially like working with the elderly who can become very isolated and lonely if their hearing isn’t good.’
Free hearing checks
‘It’s really surprising how many people are affected by hearing loss, 1 in 6 adults in the UK. At Specsavers in Antrim we offer free 3-minute hearing checks seven days a week for anyone who is concerned about their hearing. From the results of that check we can advise a full hearing test if necessary which is also free and is offered at our clinics each Wednesday. My key phrase is that ‘no-one needs to suffer in silence’, so if you have any hearing worries come in and see me anytime.’
