Tell us a bit about yourself?

I am an optometrist director at Specsavers in Airdrie and Coatbridge. I’m 34 years old and have been happily married for the past four years to my wife Lowra. We have an amazing little boy called Edward, who was born in May 2014. I have always been a very keen golfer and have had the privilege of playing on courses all over the world. I also enjoy keeping fit, socialising with friends and spending time with my wee boy.

Do you wear specs, and if so, what is your favourite style?

I have worn glasses since the age of 11 and I wear contact lenses every day. While I mainly use my glasses in the evenings and mornings, I like to have at least two different sets of frames to choose from. One in a classic style, perhaps by our designers Jeff Banks or Tommy Hilfiger, that I can use for work; and a second frame in a slightly quirkier style, like Boss Orange, Osiris or Replay,  for more casual occasions. I use Umere daily disposables lenses as I feel that they give me the freedom to enjoy an active lifestyle and offer great comfort for extended wear.

How long have you been with Specsavers?

I have been committed to my role as a director in Airdrie and Coatbridge for seven years and worked for Specsavers as an optometrist for six years previously.

What is the best part of your role?

I really enjoy my job and I have gained a great deal of experience and expertise over my 13 year career. We have the freedom to run our practice day to day with the security and support from a highly trusted brand. Being an optometrist has fantastic variation as I get to meet different patients every day.

What does an eye test involve?

An eye examination is very thorough and involves a number of processes in order to ensure that the best care is provided. We use state of the art technology to photograph the retina, allowing us to compare detailed images. This will highlight any changes in the health of the eye. We also carry out a number of tests to check patients’ prescription, muscle balance within the eye and other aspects of eye health.

Why is it so important to get your eyes checked regularly?

It is imperative to get eyes checked regularly as there are multiple general health conditions that can be identified from a routine eye examination, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Also, a number of eye conditions such as glaucoma have no symptoms and the earlier they are detected the better the prognosis. These reasons alone demonstrate why regular eye examinations are so important.

Does your store also offer Hearcare?

In December 2014, our Airdrie store underwent an extensive shop fit expansion, allowing us to offer Hearcare services to our patients. We now have a soundproofed hearing assessment room and a regular Hearing Aid Dispenser allowing us to provide fantastic value and state of the art hearing aid technology to the residents of Airdrie and Coatbridge.

Who should consider getting a hearing test?

Anyone suspected of having difficulty with their hearing should have a screening hearing test. We offer this to any adults over the age of 40 and can give an immediate result as to whether there is any hearing loss. If this is discovered then we can arrange an appointment with the Hearing Aid Dispenser for fitting of advanced hearing aids, some of which are so discrete they can even be hidden in the ear canal.

How can customers book an eye or hearing test?

Patients can book a hearing test or an eye examination by calling the Airdrie store on 01236 745590 and eye examinations in the Coatbridge store on 01236 427733.

Appointments can also be requested online at Airdrie or Coatbridge.
