Optometry Scotland has announced the appointment of its new vice chair, optometrist and businessman David Quigley.

The organisation – which represents the views of the optometry sector to the Scottish Government – assigned the prestigious title to the longstanding director who is partner in Specsavers optical, audiology and Healthcall businesses around Glasgow and Aberdeen.

The appointment follows a majority vote within the Optometry Scotland members, recognising David’s continued support and thought leadership within the industry in Scotland.

The role will support the new Optometry Scotland chair, Samantha Watson. The role involves debate and decision making within the profession, while discussing ways to ensure Scotland can deliver world class eye care for its communities.

A word from David Quigly

David said: ‘I am honoured to be serving as vice chair of Optometry Scotland – this non-profit organisation serves an incredibly valuable role representing the entire sector to the Scottish Parliament, Scottish Government Health Directories and other key stakeholders.

‘Our industry has undergone significant changes in recent years and particularly since the introduction of the new GOS (General Ophthalmic Services) contract in 2006.

‘This trend is set to continue in the face of ongoing changes in the demographics of our patients and clinicians as well as development in legislation and technology.

Working with a fantastic organisation

‘I look forward to working with Optometry Scotland to help deliver its business plan and ensure it remains at the representative forefront of optometry, dispensing and the optical sector in Scotland.’

The optometry profession in Scotland has made much progress in recent years by offering a multitude of eye care services for patients free of charge. In addition to David Quigley’s appointment, the four independent members' seats of the Council of Optometry Scotland have been confirmed.

David Bonellie and Richard Spruce have been reappointed, while two new members have been appointed - Ian Jarvis and Scott Mackie.
