As National Road Safety Week approaches, a local optician has pledged to keep local children safe by donating hi-visibility vests to two Huyton schools.

Raising awareness

Sylvester Primary School and St Aidan’s Primary School were both presented with 100 vests each by store director David Ashton and assistant manager Leanne King, both from Specsavers in Huyton.

It is hoped the hi-vis vests will help to keep the school children safer when their learning takes them out into the community and also when walking to and from school.

Jenny Ely, business manager at Sylvester Primary School commented: ‘We are incredibly grateful to Specsavers in Huyton for donating the hi-vis vests to our school.

‘The donation is a great help at this time of year and will undoubtedly keep the children at both schools safer and far more visible to motorists too.’

Road Safety Week

The high visibility vests were donated to the primary schools as part of a national initiative from Specsavers throughout Road Safety Week. The aim is to increase the safety of local children when out and about by making it easier for motorists to spot them.

Store director at Specsavers in Huyton, David Ashton comments: ‘At this time of year with the dark mornings and nights, combined with the winter weather, it can be difficult for motorists to see pedestrians, and dusk is particularly hazardous when the children are walking home from school.

‘With this in mind we decided that, as part of Road Safety Week, we wanted to help increase the safety of children in Huyton and offered both schools free high visibility vests. I used to be a pupil at St Aiden’s, so it was particularly nice to link up with that school again.

Free eye tests

David continues: ‘As part of the initiative, we are also hoping to raise awareness of free glasses and eye tests that are available to under 16-year-olds. It is important to make sure that children have regular eye tests as an undetected problem could lead to something more severe in the long term.’

‘Overall, it’s been a very rewarding experience - it’s a real pleasure to be able to help two wonderful local schools.’
