World diabetes day set to put vision loss into focus
Diabetes affects more than 3.2 million people in the UK. However, did you know that around 30% of diabetics will also develop diabetic retinopathy, which if left undetected could lead to blindness?
Clinical spokesperson, Dr Nigel Best, says: ‘Eye examinations do more than just test your vision. By examining your retina or the back of your eye, an optometrist can detect eye diseases such as diabetes, and advise you to see your GP. Spotting symptoms early can make all the difference.’
On World Diabetes Day, Friday 14 November 2014, participating Specsavers stores are offering either free eye tests or £1 eye tests to raise awareness and/or money for Diabetes UK to fund research into preventable blindness and encourage more people to book in for an eye examination, which could detect the condition and save their sight.
