Generous residents in Windsor are helping their local optometrist visit India in a bid to improve the country’s eye health.
Nandini Soni, from Specsavers Windsor, has been raising money for the trip, which will see her use her skills at a sight camp for those who cannot get to an optician.
The latest fundraising effort saw Nandini and the team put on a bake sale on June 26 in-store, raising more than £100 for charity Unite for Sight thanks to their generous customers.
Nandini says: ‘The response from my colleagues and customers so far has been amazing – everyone’s been so supportive. Unite for Sight do incredible work trying to make basic eye care available to those who otherwise have no access to it. It’s these basic services that can often save eyesight, so I’m so grateful for all the generosity we’ve received.’
Unite for Sight empowers communities worldwide to improve eye health and eliminate preventable blindness. It invites volunteers to take part in its sight camps overseas to provide assistance to existing eye care services. And Nandini will be going to Odisha, India, in September where she’ll lend over four years’ worth of experience to locals.
The team began fundraising in June, offering free services, such as eye tests, glasses adjustments and even glasses cleaning, in return for donations. So far, £182.75 has been raised for the cause.
A word from the store director
Rupal Patel, Director at Specsavers Windsor, says: ‘It’s an absolute pleasure to be able to facilitate Nandini’s fundraising efforts in-store. As an opticians in Windsor, it’s, of course, our priority to care for the health of residents locally, but we’re proud to help extend this capacity to those in need wherever possible – supporting Nandini with some in-store offers is the least we could do.’
The Specsavers Windsor team are planning more fundraising activities such as staff mufti days and even more bake sales throughout July and August and is encouraging locals to drop in to store and join in with the activities on offer.
‘If you’re due for an eye test, now is definitely the time to visit us,’ adds Nandini.
‘We want to test as many eyes as possible to raise as much as we can for Unite for Sight so that they can continue their fantastic work!’
