Wigans winner is ready for london grand final
Stylish specs wearer Jan McConville, from Wigan, is officially the most stylish 60+ glasses wearer in the UK.
The glamorous 62-year-old beat thousands of other entrants in the Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2016 competition to win the 60+ age category – securing her a place in a celeb-packed awards ceremony in central London on 11 October.
From selfie to stardom
Jan entered the competition earlier this year with a selfie of her in her favourite frames and is the only person from the North West region to make it this far in the competition. She is ‘thrilled to bits’ to have won and is excited about the grand final.
‘I was totally shocked to find out that I’d won my category. To be the only person from the whole of the North-West to have made it this far is pretty overwhelming.
‘I want to wish my fellow finalists the best of luck for the final. Now all I have to worry about is what to wear!’
Frames and fortune
Jan is now in with a chance of being crowned the overall Spectacle Wearer of the Year and could win a luxury New York City break for two as well as an impressive £10,000 cash prize.
At the grand final, she will meet former pussycat doll, Kimberly Wyatt, as well as rubbing shoulders with a host of famous celebrity specs wearers.
A proud winner
The Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition aims to celebrate wearing glasses with pride and every entry raises £1 for UK anti-bullying children’s charity Kidscape, and Jan is certainly a very proud specs wearer.
‘I love wearing my glasses and I’m so pleased I entered my selfie into the competition – I had no idea I’d get this far.
‘My glasses are part of my wardrobe and help me change up my look whenever I like. I started wearing them a few years ago and I’ve never looked back!’
A big win for Wigan
Wigan Specsavers store director Graeme Gardner is proud of Jan for representing the whole region at the final in her category.
‘It’s an amazing achievement that Jan has made it so far in the competition – she looks fantastic in her specs.
‘The whole team will have everything crossed for her on the 11th and, either way, she’s sure to make the whole town proud.’
Now in its 21st year, the competition celebrates those who wear glasses across a broad age range: it features five age categories of 16-24; 25-34; 35-44; 45-59 and 60+.
