Stuart Totten stresses importance of eye examinations

Specsavers in Weymouth is keen to remind the community how important a 2 year eye examination is.  Not only does it check for vision problems, but also minor eye conditions through to more serious aliments.

What an eye test can uncover

Says Stuart Totten, store director at Specsavers in Weymouth:  'Many people are unaware that an eye test can uncover various and serious health conditions.  Here are just few conditions that I can potentially spot during a routine eye test:

1. Indicators of diabetes

An eye test can detect the indicators of this condition before you notice any changes to your vision.  It affects the small blood vessels in the eye, damaging the retina, which is vital for sight. We can pick up on early characteristic changes, such as tiny leaks from damaged blood vessels.'

2.  High blood pressure

'When I look at the retina, I can spot if the blood vessels are narrowed or are leaking. Those with high blood presure can develop a condition called hypertensive retinopathy. In this condition blood vessel walls can thicken, narrowing the vessels and restricting blood flow. In some cases, the retina becomes swollen and the blood vessels can leak.’

3. High cholesterol

'Again, the blood vessels in the eyes can tell us lots of things.  Maybe we will spot little lumps of cholesterol running through the blood vessels. These can blockages resulting in short episodes of visual loss.'

4. Tumours

'In rare cases, this can happen.  It may be a cancer of the eye such as melanomas, but sometimes, extreme swelling of the optic nerves can be visible during an eye test, which may indicate that a brain tumour is present.

'The above reasons - combined with our vision requirements - are why we always stress the importance of 2 year eye examinations.  If it's been sometime since your last test, do pop by and make a booking a priority.'
