Wearside eyecare experts have collected more than 5000 pairs of glasses from the community to help improve access to eyecare services overseas.

Specsavers stores in Sunderland, Chester-le-Street, Seaham and Peterlee encouraged local residents to donate old and unwanted glasses for international sight charity Vision Aid Overseas.

Dean Baldassarra, store director of Specsavers in Sunderland, said: ‘We’ve been blown away by the response from residents. It’s wonderful that the sale of the reusable materials from these glasses will help create a positive effect on the lives of people less fortunate.’
