A staff member from Specsavers in Walton-on-Thames visited Dhudike, Punjab to carry out sight tests for the community. Navdeep Gill, an optometrist at the Specsavers store, created an eye camp in the village and raised awareness among the locals about the importance of regular eye tests.
Close to home
This was a cause close to Navdeep’s heart as her Grandfather lost most of his sight to glaucoma something that could have been prevented if the awareness had been there. She funded this trip herself and with the support of her family carried out numerous eye tests.
Generous donations from customers
But the goodwill did not stop with Navdeep: she also visited the town armed with unused and unwanted glasses that had been generously donated by the Walton community as well as taking eye drops for those in the community suffering from dry eyes.
Life changing experience
Navdeep said of her experience: ‘I really feel as though my trip has made a difference and I was overwhelmed by the local support. For me it was a way of acknowledging and raising awareness of glaucoma, which many of my family members suffer from and giving something back to their ancestral town – really going back to their roots. I would do it again in a heartbeat!”
