Specsavers in Guernsey has taken on trainee optometrist Rachael De Carteret.
The 22-year-old recently graduated from Cardiff University with first-class honours in optometry. She will now have to complete a pre-registration year under the guidance of three registered optometrists at the store before becoming fully qualified.
Former Ladies’ College student Rachael starting working in the store on a Saturday while she was still at school and worked there during her gap year and holidays.
‘I knew from a young age that I wanted to work in healthcare,’ says Rachael, ‘and when I started working here I decided that I wanted a career in optometry.
‘I’m a bit nervous but it is really exciting; everything over the last few years has been building up to this. It’s nice to be able to come back to Guernsey to work in this store because I know everyone here and feel really settled. The store directors are really approachable and have been really supportive.’
Rachael is the third pre-registration optometrist the store has taken on since 2012 and store director Sarah Burchett says they are keen to support local talent.
‘There aren’t many opportunities for optometry graduates to train in Guernsey so we’re really pleased to be able to offer Rachael this position. It’s also important for us to invest in the future of our business to make sure we have great staff who can offer a highly professional service to our customers.’
Rachael will undertake a rigorous training schedule at the store which will include appraisals by UK assessors and further exams. She will be supported by directors Sarah and Dominic Burchett and optometrist Shona Linton.
