The importance of research
Although our knowledge of eye disease may seem extensive in the modern medical world there are still a large number of eye diseases which are poorly understood such as Myopia (short sight), Age related macular degeneration, Glaucoma and Diabetic eye disease. Until we better understand the causes of these conditions developing effective treatments is difficult.
Specsavers’ clinical spokesman, Dr Nigel Best, says: ‘There are now a number of trials being conducted into gene replacement therapy and stem cell research to prevent and treat eye disease. Eye research is primarily aimed at improving early diagnosis, understanding the causes of and developing new treatments for eye diseases.’
