A Teddington woman has seen off competition from thousands of specs wearers in the South East to be named a regional finalist in the Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition.

28-year-old Amy Keane, who has been a proud glasses wearer since she was 15, was announced as a regional finalist in the annual Specsavers competition after entering online with her twin sister Jenny, who has been crowned as the winner of the Irish Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition.

What happens now

Amy now stands a chance of going head to head with her sister in the grand final in London in October, where hopefuls will compete for the chance to take home the top title, £10,000, a luxury holiday in the Bahamas and a wardrobe of specs to suit every style.

Celebration

Amy’s local Specsavers store in Kingston-Upon-Thames celebrated her success in the competition by presenting her with a £150 glasses voucher, a bottle of Champagne and a certificate. Amy said: ‘I entered the competition with my sister and we couldn’t believe it when we were both announced as regional finalists. My sister, who lives in Dublin, has now also been crowned the Irish competition winner. It would be wonderful to join her in the grand final but I’m thrilled to have made it this far.’

Specsavers Kingston-Upon-Thames store director, Paul Bhalla, added: ‘We’d like to congratulate Amy on her success and she has our full backing. It’s great to have an ambassador for specs wearers in our area.’

More about the awards

The Spectacle Wearer of the Year awards were launched by Girls Aloud singer and West End star Kimberley Walsh earlier this year. Glasses wearers were encouraged by Specsavers stores across the country to submit a picture of themselves in their best pair of specs.

Four age category finalists: 16-24; 25-39; 40-59 and 60+, a Facebook favourite voted for by the public and Ireland’s winner will attend the awards at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on Tuesday 7 October. All will win a VIP makeover, with one overall winner taking home the ultimate accolade in specs wearing.

The ultimate Spectacle Wearer of the Year winner will receive £10,000, plus a week’s holiday for two in the Bahamas courtesy of the Grand Lucayan Beach & Golf Resort and a wardrobe of specs to suit every style.
