Michael O'Kane from Specsavers Morningside gives advice on eye health to charity support group

Members of Edinburgh charity support group, The Open Door Morningside, enjoyed a talk from a local optician ahead of National Eye Health Week (18-24 September).

Michael O’Kane, store director at Specsavers in Morningside, spoke to the Seniors Men’s Group about the importance of eye health and various conditions that can develop in later life.

Mature eyes

He discussed what the men should be looking out for as mature eyes may need some extra assistance and are also at a higher risk of developing certain eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which require expert attention.

Attendees also had the chance to ask Michael any questions they had about eyes and any conditions they felt were affecting them.

Kirsteen Powell, day care manager of The Open Door Morningside, said: ‘Michael's talk was greatly appreciated by all attendees and his passion clearly shone through.

‘Our organisation has been running for 35 years with the aim of reducing isolation and loneliness by providing love, support, inclusion and a sense of community.

‘At The Open Door we see how isolating an experience sensory loss is for the members of our day care services. We need more ambassadors like Michael raising awareness of eye health issues in the community.’

Focus on eyecare

Michael adds: ‘I was delighted to be asked to speak at The Open Door, it was an enjoyable afternoon with lots of interaction.

‘I wanted to focus the specialist treatments and the services we deliver at Specsavers Morningside, as well as the importance of regular eye exams and hearing tests. I was also keen to highlight the links to sensory deprivation and the onset of dementia, depression and isolation.

‘I hope the afternoon was helpful and shed some light on not only what we do at the store from a clinical point of view, but also how important it is to look after your sight and hearing.’
