Our regional semi-finalist
Leicester based Leanne O’Neill has been chosen from thousands of other specs wearers across the region as a national semi-finalist in the Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition.
Leanne, 37, was encouraged to enter the competition after her cousin saw it advertised on social media. The mum of two, who works as a hairdresser, is now in with a chance of winning £10,000, a luxury holiday for two to New York and a glasses wardrobe from Specsavers worth £1,000.
Help from Specsavers
‘I first started wearing glasses in February of last year when a battle with meningitis damaged my eyesight,’ Leanne explained. ‘I was very apprehensive about wearing specs at first; it was a big change to get used to but staff at Specsavers helped me to pick glasses that really suit me – I wouldn’t be without them now!’
During a visit to her local Specsavers, Leanne received a certificate, a bottle of champagne and a £150 glasses voucher to mark her achievement of reaching this stage of the competition.
Store director Baljit Kaur commented: ‘We were all very happy to hear that Leanne has made it through to this stage of the competition. Wearing glasses was a big change for her, but she has taken it in her stride and wears them with real confidence. We want to wish Leanne the best of luck in making it through to the final.’
Wearing specs with confidence
Leanne added: ‘My glasses are definitely part of my style now – I’ve received several compliments about them and it makes me feel great about specs. So my advice to other glasses wearers would definitely be to wear them with absolute confidence!’
The awards were launched by former Pussycat Doll, Kimberly Wyatt, earlier this year. If she triumphs in her age category, Leanne could meet Kimberly and other celebs at the star-studded awards ceremony in October, dubbed the Oscars for specs wearers.
The competition has five age categories – 16-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-59 and 60+. All age category winners will win a VIP makeover and a trip to London for the awards evening, with one overall winner taking home the ultimate prize.
