On the back of a very successful 2018, a junior Yardley cricket club has been given the support of Specsavers Yardley for the coming season.
The store sponsored Sheldon Marlborough Cricket Club for 2018, helping to boost opportunities for local children to learn, train and develop in the sport.
The deal enables the club to acquire more equipment, train more coaches and therefore offer cricket to more youngsters from the Yardley, Sheldon and Stechford areas. Currently, the club has 60 junior members between the ages of nine and 15, most of which live in the local area.
Howzat for an awesome 2018
Teams certainly shone through the 2018 season with the Under 9s reaching the final four of the county competition, picking up three other satellite tournaments across the year.
The Under 10s remained unbeaten through their league competition and got through tough games in the county quarter and semi-finals, before being beaten by Knowle and Dorridge in the county final.
The Under 11’s went one better and were crowned county champions - an amazing achievement given that five of the team were still Under 10s. The Under 13’s also finished as county runners-up and the Under 12’s only lost one game all year. The Club now has four players in full county squads and four more in the district squads for the Winter.
Eyes on the ball for 2019
For 2019, the Club has entered an additional U10 team and as a result of the success as well as entering the county premier league competitions for U11 and U13 in 2019.
‘Hats off to Sheldon Marlborough Cricket Club and all the players,’ says Specsavers store director Dee Browning. ‘It’s been fabulous to follow their success and we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for this year, we’re delighted to be involved and offering our support.’
As a not-for-profit organisation Sheldon Marlborough Cricket Club relies on subscriptions and sponsorship, so local support is vital to ensure the valuable work they do teaching and nurturing young talent continues.
