Elizabeth Ball, a 60-year-old Kings Lynn local, is delighted that a recent style overhaul that resulted in her very first selfie has landed her the title of Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2016 regional finalist.
Bold new style
Elizabeth was chosen out of hundreds of entrants in the East of England’s 60+ age category who submitted a bespectacled self-portrait taken on their camera phones. To mark her achievement she was invited into her local Kings Lynn store, where she has been a loyal customer for more than 20 years, to collect a prize of Specsavers vouchers worth £150 and a bottle of champagne.
She explained how it was a recent trip to Specsavers (currently in the process of opening a second Kings Lynn store) that inspired her to embrace a bolder look, but that she never expected anything to come from her entry.
Elizabeth added: ‘I came in for a new pair of glasses only a few months ago and something clicked. I had always stuck to simple and minimal specs styles, and I never thought of bringing any attention to myself. But I was browsing in store and realised the range of styles and colours there were and decided I wanted a change. A few weeks later I’d had several compliments on my bold new style and I took my very first selfie and on a whim entered it into the Spectacle Wearer of The Year competition. Now look at me!’
Loyal customer for 20 years
Elizabeth credits the store’s team for its customer care. She said: ‘The staff at Kings Lynn are so helpful and patient in everything they do. It’s so exciting that they’re expanding, I don’t know which store I’ll choose! I can’t thank them enough for all their care over the years, I’ve been loyal to the store for a good 20 years now so they must be doing something right!’
Store director Mark Willis and store manager Paul Eagling presented Elizabeth with her prizes, last month, and joined in sharing a smile outside the store. Mark said: ‘It’s wonderful to see how much of a change Elizabeth’s bold new specs have made to her confidence. We pride ourselves in our customer service with attention to eye health and care but the fashion side of glasses can be just as important. Elizabeth’s gone from shy and reserved to a woman who (rightly so) is proud to show off her love of glasses and fashion. She truly deserves to jet off and showcase her style in New York and we’re so honoured that she’s been dedicated to the store for so long! Paul, the team and I will be keeping our fingers crossed that Elizabeth makes it to the finals in London and is crowned Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2016.’
If Elizabeth wins in her age category of 60+ years, she could meet former pussycat doll, Kimberly Wyatt at the celeb-packed awards ceremony at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on 11 October.
The new Kings Lynn Specsavers store, based inside Sainsbury’s on Hardwick Industrial Estate, will open on 10 October, 2016.
