Newport's opticians are getting ready to strap on their stilettos to raise money for breast cancer care and research.

Colleagues from the Specsavers store on the High Street are holding a Specsavers Stiletto Stroll on Sunday 20 October, around Newport city centre in aid of Velindre Cancer Centre.

Specsavers is an official fundraising partner with Velindre, which provides specialist cancer treatments for more than 1.5 million people across Wales, including breast cancer.

The stroll is part of a week of fundraising at the store where the opticians will also be giving £1 for every eye test carried out to Velindre, and carrying out free glasses adjustments and minor repairs in return for a donation to the charity.

Craig Mackenzie, the director of the Newport store, is keen to support Newport: ‘Specsavers is a community opticians and sadly every community is affected by cancer. This is a great way to have some fun and raise money for a really great cause.’

Professor Peter Barrett-Lee, Breast Cancer Consultant at Velindre Cancer Centre, said: ‘More than 2,500 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in Wales each year, and the incidence is rising.

More than half of these women will be treated, supported and cared for at Velindre Cancer Centre. ‘We believe that in the future, and with support, more and more patients will be successfully treated for breast cancer. It will happen. We are committed to making it happen, and the money we can raise will be crucial.’

Anyone wanting to sponsor the team can do so throughout the week by calling into the Specsavers Newport store. Or you can pick up an entry form in store, or sign up online at
