State-of-the-art optical technology

27 December, 2013
Digital retinal photography helps the optometrist see the back of the eye in great detail.

Sutton in Ashfield Specsavers has invested in a revolutionary piece of diagnostic equipment which could help to save the sight of local residents.

Advanced eye scanning

The opticians store has taken delivery of an advanced eye scanning system, which can be used on all ages to help detect a number of eye conditions such as; glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy.

The Optical Coherence Tomography system (OCT) is similar to ultrasound, but uses light waves instead of sound waves to penetrate a medium and create a picture from the wave reflections – in this case, the back of the eye.

The 3D scan will illustrate the different layers that make up the optic nerve and retina, and can be cross referenced with a digital photograph of the surface of the eye to pinpoint areas of concern.

Spotting eye conditions

Nigel Davidson, store director, says ‘It’s really exciting to be able to enhance the standard of eyecare provided at the store with this sophisticated piece of equipment. The OCT creates a 3D picture beneath the surface of the regular retinal image, allowing our opticians to easily diagnose and refer customers to a specialist for further treatment, should this be required.

‘Over the years we have continuously invested in new technology as it has become available. When we first opened in the Idlewells Centre in 1995 we only had a box chart on the wall and there wasn’t a single computer in sight! It’s incredible how technology has developed and the 3D OCT is the biggest single investment in ophthalmic equipment that the store has ever made - around £50,000.’

OCT equipment is usually only available in hospitals, so the convenience of having the state-of-the-art technology in Sutton itself will be hugely beneficial for local people. 3D OCT scans are now available at Specsavers in Sutton-in-Ashfield and unlike other opticians, the store does not charge extra for the service.

Changing lives and saving sight

Mr Davidson added: ‘We held an in-store launch, which generated a lot of excitement about the new equipment. Our local guests provided great feedback and we can’t wait to share the new technology with our customers, especially as it could really change people’s lives.

‘We’re committed to providing the very best in optical care at an affordable price, and so don’t charge extra for an OCT scan with our standard eye examination – please pop into the store for more information and advice.’
