Staff at Specsavers Cookstown are highlighting International Sunglasses Day (27 June) and supporting RNIB’s #Shades for Sight campaign. The campaign which coincides with International Sunglasses Day is raising awareness of the importance of protecting your eyes by wearing sunglasses during the summer.

RNIB #ShadesforSight

RNIB is encouraging people to post a #ShadesforSight sunglasses selfie on RNIB NI’s twitter (@RNIBNI) or facebook page (@RNIBNorthernIreland) and to tag friends and family to take part and spread the #ShadesforSight message.

Protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays

Nearly half of all cases of sight loss are preventable and it’s important to protect your eyes and those of your children. UVA and UVB rays are invisible rays contained in sunlight and are the rays that we protect our skin from so that we don’t get sunburnt. Because our eyes rely on light to work properly, UVA and UVB rays also enter our eyes. Much of the UV light is absorbed by the structures of the eye without damage, however, it has been shown that high exposure to UVA and UVB may be a factor in a number of eye diseases, in particular cataracts.

The best way to protect against damage is to use a UV filter that stops most of the harmful rays of the sun entering the eyes. You should make sure your sunglasses are marked CE¹ or British Standard BS EN ISO 12312-1:2013 for a safe level of UV protection.
