The Specsavers store in Newtownards is ‘rallying’ support for a local man who is set to make a huge comeback this year on the Circuit of Ireland challenge.

The store has provided sponsorship to a well-known local, Stanley Orr, husband of Specsavers store manager, Carol Orr. Stanley is returning to rally car driving after almost 30 years of being out of the driver’s seat.

Having been crowned as the Northern Irish Historic Champion in 2013, he is aiming to become this year’s Historic British Champion, and is currently sitting in fourth position.

Importance of eye tests

Having lived with diabetes for almost 40 years, Stanley knows too well the importance of regular sight tests, and how often these can detect various retinal changes and symptoms, such as those linked to diabetes, at an early stage when preventative treatment can be prescribed. Stanley wears glasses from the local opticians, which are specifically tinted for rally car driving and have DriveWear lenses fitted to enhance his vision when on the road.

Perfect route to take

Leigh Nelson, store director, says: ‘It seemed like the perfect route that Specsavers would help out, and provide some much-needed sponsorship to Stanley for his big Circuit of Ireland comeback.

The sponsorship money has allowed Stanley maintain his Mark 1 Escort throughout the event, as well as covering entry fees to the circuits, insurance and other motor racing essentials.

' Stanley has also been a long-standing customer of ours and we would like to wish him all the very best in his big comeback and his challenge to secure the title of Historic British Champion.’
