Meet the Shirley store manager
Ever since joining Specsavers in Shirley as a ‘Saturday boy’ in 2011, John Ruis has had strong ambitions of advancing his career in optical services.
Six years later, John, 23, is now manager at the store and leads a team of 17 staff members dedicated to providing professional eye and hearing care to local customers.
Starting out as an optical assistant, John quickly developed his knowledge of optometry by completing both Cert 3 and Cert 4 optical dispensing courses.
He then advanced to assistant manager at the Shirley store and gained ILM Level 2 qualifications in leadership and management. He is now halfway to completing his Level 3 ILM course.
John said: ‘I became a manager as I want to be a director one day, so I always wanted to progress. I enjoy the great team we have here and the job in general.’
John’s responsibilities as store manager include maintaining optometrist and staff diaries and overseeing the store’s optical laboratory, as well as handling customer queries and all the other general optical assistant roles, including dispensing and pre-testing.
He is now aiming to help the business grow and improve service for customers through a number of new initiatives, adding: ‘I plan to increase our number of multifocal fits and hopefully open up a new testing room soon.’
