Meet Glennys Connell from Reading Broad Street
Administrative assistant Glennys Connell is one of the longest-serving members of the Specsavers Reading Broad Street team. Keep reading to find out more about Glennys and the store.
What does your role involve?
Many different things such as meeting and greeting customers and running the optometry bookings. I also oversee the Hearcare screener, cover the call centre and check eye pressures as well. They keep me busy.
Were you born in Reading?
I’m originally from Scotland but have been living down in Reading for the past 50 years.
How did you come to work at the Specsavers store?
This is a funny story. I originally came in to the store for an eye test as I was having a lot of eye problems. I got chatting to Don, the store director, and ending up giving him my CV not knowing what his role was. The next day, I get a call saying I’d got the job. I haven’t looked back since.
Do you wear glasses yourself, and if so, do you have a favourite style?
I do wear glasses, anything wild and wonderful.
How long have you been at the Reading store?
12 years this past January.
What is the best part of your role?
It’s definitely the fact that I get to meet new people every day. Being friendly and compassionate is so important in a job like this.
Do you have any training courses booked in?
I’m on the list to take part in the Dementia Friends training course. With our elderly customer base, it’s so important to keep updated on how to look after customers with difficult conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I love spending time with my friends and granddaughter. She’s currently studying down in London so I like to see her as much as I can and will be cheering the loudest at her graduation this summer.
