Omagh showcased at Spirit Awards
Omagh store directors Donna Harbison and Emma Finn joined UTV presenters Marc Mallett and Pamela Ballantine to celebrate local unsung heroes at this year’s Sunday Life Spirit of NI Awards supported by Specsavers.
Over 350 people including the 10 remarkable winners and their families attended the star-studded bash at the Culloden Hotel in June.
Omagh fire chief honoured
Terry Canning, crew commander at Omagh Fire Station was honoured for his selfless actions in helping a fellow competitor complete the Boston Marathon. Terry made headlines around the world in April when competing his 20th marathon in Boston. He noticed a runner struggling and carried her to the finishing line before setting her down so that the lady could cross the line herself.

Emma and Donna said they were thrilled that Terry was presented with the Spirit of Sport trophy: ‘It’s a fantastic story of helping others across the globe. Year on year the awards evening is a brilliant event and it’s wonderful to see so many deserving people being recognised for their fantastic contribution to our communities.’
Celebrities lend their support
Well-known faces who attended the gala awards included veteran broadcaster Eamonn Holmes, soap star Lucy Fallon (Bethany, Coronation Street) along with Emmerdale actors Dominic Brunt, Gaynor Faye, Michelle Hardwick, Liam Fox – otherwise known as Paddy, Megan, Vanessa and Dan. Local actresses Bronagh Waugh and Niamh McGrady also joined the ‘Spirit cast’ to present awards to the worthy winners.
