Residents in Okehampton and the surrounding area can take advantage of the most up-to-date 3D scanning eye care technology thanks to their local Specsavers.

Cutting edge equipment

The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine is a cutting-edge piece of equipment, usually found in hospital eye departments, which provides the most detail possible of the eye. It is used for a variety of functions including screening and management of conditions such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.

The technology produces a structural scan of the eye, including layers of the eye that would not normally be visible in a traditional eye test.

Early detection

Okehampton store director and optometrist, Kath Dandy, said: ‘The OCT scanner provides us with the opportunity to detect many eye conditions years earlier than traditional methods.

'We can then refer, and treatment or management can begin earlier. Most importantly we can keep a customer’s OCT scans on file and monitor changes at each appointment. The OCT scan takes just a few seconds and causes no pain and makes no direct contact with the eye.

'It is in addition to a thorough eye test, during which the optometrist will use a range of clinical tests and procedures to measure the quality of someone’s vision, as well as taking an overview of the health and function of their eyes and how they work together. OCT scans are offered to every patient who attends for an eye test.
