Motherwell focuses on helping customers with dementia
Staff at Specsavers in Motherwell have joined forces with Alzheimer Scotland to support customers who are living with dementia.
A representative from Alzheimer Scotland recently visited the Brandon Parade store to speak to the team about the effects of the condition, and encouraged staff to get involved in fundraising for the cause.
Staff were so inspired by the visit that they decided to set up a charity box in store – and collected a total of £40 in donations from generous customers.
The team at the store is also supporting Dementia Friends – an Alzheimer’s Society training initiative which helps people develop a deeper understanding of dementia, and in doing so, helps employees support customers who are affected by the condition.

Ian Moss, store director at Specsavers Motherwell, said: ‘Our store is a big part of the community, so it’s vital that we’re able to communicate with each and every one of our customers in the most effective way possible.
‘Many members of the team have already taken on Dementia Friends training and have been involved in some really interesting, practical activities that help them to understand the impact the condition has on individuals and families.
‘We’re very proud to be involved in supporting Alzheimer Scotland and Dementia Friends and we hope that it will help make the optician experience easier for people who are living with the condition.’
Commitment to understanding and training
The Dementia Friends course is completed online and comprises a series of videos based on a selection of scenarios. The second part of the course is a classroom session which provides practical information on making positive, effective relationships with customers who have dementia.
When employees complete the Alzheimer Scotland training, they become recognised as Dementia Friends, with a badge to wear on their uniform to indicate their increased level of dementia awareness.
