Ophthalmic director at Specsavers in Loughton, Steven Hui, presented again as a guest speaker at this year’s Stay Safe this Winter event hosted by Epping Forest District Council.
The importance of eye health
Steven spoke to the attendants about the importance of eye health during the winter months and how a visit to the opticians should be the first port-of-call for anyone concerned they may have a minor eye condition.
He said: ‘Seeing the optometrist is not just about checking eyesight, it’s also about ensuring the health of the eye.
'We are able to check for everything from viral, fungal and bacterial eye infections, to detached retinas or haemorrhaging, to more serious conditions such as brain tumours.’
Able to give emergency referrals
‘GPs are busy and have long waiting times for patients to see their doctor.
'It would be more practical for them to come to us first, where we have the extra training and, more importantly, the equipment to quickly check the eyes and emergency refer to the hospital when necessary.’
The Stay Safe this Winter events were in partnership with West Essex Clinical Commissioning group and provide health care information with talks from professionals and community groups, highlighting local services available.
