Ipswich Specsavers has raised a total of £3,500 for the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) after nine months of fundraising and a 26-mile marathon, with donations still flooding in.

Record breaking fundraising

As this week marks National Eye Health Week (18 - 24 September), Gale Baxter an opticial assistant at Specsavers Opticians and Audiologists in Ipswich, has announced the four figure sum total that will aid the RNIB in raising awareness of sight problems, preventing sight loss and campaigning for better services to those who do suffer from sight impairments.

As part of her fundraising efforts, Gale took part in her first ever marathon earlier this year running 26.2 miles alongside a record 40,382 participants at the London Marathon. She donned her running shoes in aid of the RNIB, completing the gruelling course in four hours and 55 minutes.

Team effort

After months of fundraising through fancy dress days, in-store entertainment and sponsored events including a bike ride in front of the store, the team had their biggest push for Gale’s efforts by dressing in running gear, wearing medals and staging their own start/finish line.

Speaking about her experience, Gale says: ‘It’s been such an incredible year. I’ve run half marathons in the past but never a full one, so the sense of achievement was overwhelming. The most satisfying part is knowing all my hard work has raised thousands of pounds for such an important cause.

‘I have worked for Specsavers for almost 25 years and I am passionate about helping people with sight loss. I’d like to thank staff and the community in Ipswich who have donated and supported me throughout my training.’
