Specsavers in Forfar is raising funds to help send a member of staff abroad to volunteer for Vision Aid Overseas (VAO).

Volunteering in Ghana

Optometrist Jayne Smeaton, will visit Ghana in February next year for two weeks to help the charity continue its vital work in the country.

Vision Aid Overseas operates in a number of developing countries and aims to improve the eye health of those less fortunate by providing much-needed eye tests and treatment, and training up local optometrists.

Jayne will be providing eyecare to people in remote parts of the country by conducting eye examinations, dispensing glasses and diagnosing ocular diseases. She will also be helping to train local professionals and students to enable them to provide eyecare in their own communities.

Specsavers will hold a weekly raffle at the Forfar store to boost Jayne’s fundraising total. Customers can win back the cost of their glasses.

Improving eye health abroad

Blair Michie, store director at Specsavers in Forfar, said: ‘We are very proud of Jayne for volunteering her time and expertise in order to help improve the eye health of locals in Ghana.

‘We’ll be holding several fundraising drives to help her raise the money needed to cover the cost of her visit.

‘In Britain we are used to having access to excellent eyecare on our high streets but many people in developing countries are not as lucky so it’s important we do what we can to improve this.’

Donating unwanted specs

The store also regularly donates unwanted pairs of specs to the charity with the help of the community. The glasses are recycled and the money raised is used to fund the charity’s work.

Blair continued: ‘Specs wearers in Forfar have helped us to donate a fantastic number of frames in the past year and I’d like to encourage them to continue to donate old glasses to our appeal.’

Locals can get involved in the ongoing appeal by dropping their old specs into the store on Castle Street, where they will find VAO collection boxes.
