Protect your eyes this summer
It’s been a fantastic month of bright, summery weather and with this in mind, Specsavers in Catford and Lewisham is encouraging local people to make sure they protect their eyes and make sure they have the correct sunglasses to combat the sun.
Why wear sunglasses?
First and foremost, sunglasses are vitally important in protecting the eyes from the harmful UV rays emitted from the sun. Without proper protection from this UV light, there is a significantly increased risk that a person can develop a number of sight conditions, namely cataracts.
Sunglasses are also extremely important in protecting the eyes from “blue light” from the solar spectrum, which can cause damage to the retina and has also been linked to age-related macular degeneration.
A word from the director
Steven Jacobs, store director at Specsavers in Catford and Lewisham, says: ‘The recent weather has obviously been extremely well received within our store – it’s not often we’re treated to such weather in England! However, this type of weather also brings with it a number of risk factors, namely the harmful UV rays which can cause a great deal of damage to the retina and lead to serious eye conditions.
‘When on the hunt for the best sunglasses, we always recommend those that bear the CE kite mark and offer 99-100 per cent protection from UV rays – this is indicated by the UV-400 mark on the glasses.
‘A pair of sunglasses can obviously be a significant fashion accessory but people also need to be aware of the important job they do in protecting our eyes and we’re more than happy to accommodate any customers that needs tips on the best pair for them.’
