Alex Miller has been crowed this year’s Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year at the UK and Ireland’s foremost gala for glasses wearers – all in aid of anti-bullying charity Kidscape.

The 27-year-old from Silver End near Braintree was presented the award by pop star Nadine Coyle in front of a star-studded audience in London. The glitzy award ceremony, hosted by Rylan Clark-Neal, took place at 8 Northumberland.

‘It’s a huge surprise and honour’

As part of his prize, Alex won a whopping £10,000 cash prize and a £1,000 glasses wardrobe from Specsavers.

Alex said: ‘I am absolutely thrilled to bits – I wasn’t expecting to win at all so it was a huge surprise and honour! Having gone from being called four-eyes at school, to now becoming the Spectacle Wearer of the Year is just amazing, and goes to show how wearing glasses is something to be really proud of.

‘The awards ceremony was such a good night – I brought my mum along with me and she loved it! I’ve met some brilliant and inspiring people throughout this entire experience and it’s fantastic to see so much money raised for Kidscape. A massive thank you to everyone who voted for me’

Mike Bromidge, retail director at Alex’s local store, Specsavers Braintree, said: ‘We’re really chuffed that one of our customers has been named Spectacle Wearer of the Year. Alex is the perfect choice for this award; he’s charming and wears his glasses with pride.’

A night with the stars

An expert panel of judges including X Factor legend Louis Walsh, model and presenter Vogue Williams and Capital FM’s Roman Kemp helped choose Alex over seven other finalists.

Celebrities were also rewarded on the night with Steps star Claire Richards winning the Specs Appeal Award, Great British Bake Off’s Prue Leith winning the Services to Specs award – in honour of her decades of proud glasses wearing – and Good Morning Britain’s Richard Arnold taking home Best Newcomer.

Monies from awards entries, sponsorship, ticket sales and a luxury raffle were wholly donated to Kidscape, raising £120,000 bringing the total raised by Specsavers for the charity in the last nine years to half a million pounds.
