A lucky group of students from Knowle Church of England Primary Academy had a VIP guest pay them a visit recently, all thanks Specsavers in Solihull and Shirley.

Motivational speaker and endurance athlete, Dave Heeley (also known locally as ‘Blind Dave’), visited the Year 1 pupils to help them on their journey as they explore the topic of senses this term.

The visit was made possible by the sponsorship of the two Specsavers stores.

Inspiring message

Store director, Brad Parkes, explained: ‘When we heard that Blind Dave was going to be visiting Knowle Academy we knew we had to see how we could get involved. We’re huge fans of Dave and the brilliant things he has achieved so listening to him talk was fantastic.

‘He spoke to the students about what life is like without one of your senses, the work of his dog, Seamus, and the inspiring message that even with a condition such as blindness, you can still achieve great things. Everyone was enchanted by his stories, and I think we might even have some marathon runners on our hands.’

'Grateful to Specsavers'

Principal at Knowle Academy, Miss Godsall said: ‘We are so grateful to Brad and the team from Specsavers for sponsoring Dave’s visit. The students learnt so much from his talk and his message is a very important one.’

Dave is the only blind person to have run seven marathons in seven days on seven continents. He also is the only blind person to have run and cycled from John O'Groats to Lands’ End - which is the equivalent of ten marathons in ten days.
