Charity run in the Ethiopian sun
Specsavers Bethnal Green has welcomed back director Amit Kara to the store after he took part in the Great Ethiopian Run for the eye health charity Vision Aid Overseas (VAO).
Challenge of a lifetime
Amit finished the 10k race round the streets of Addis Ababa in one hour and 11 minutes, and raised £3000 for the charity in the process.
While in Ethiopia, he also met athletics legend and national hero Haile Gebrselassie.
The race, which takes place 8,000 feet above sea level, attracted over 40,000 runners in total, from all over the world.
Amit said: ‘The race was awesome. The atmosphere was electric. It was very hot on the day, but the adrenaline carried myself and the rest of the Specsavers team through to the finish line.
‘Having helped out in a vision clinic in Ethiopia myself in the past, I know how much the money raised means to Vision Aid Overseas and to all the people they support. I am really pleased to have been able to help.
'It was amazing to meet Haile Gebreselassie too. He is deservedly a sporting hero to many in Ethiopia and beyond, and it was great to see how involved in the race he was – and how proud he is of it, as he should be.’
