Cycling to success for children’s charity
A cycle-a-thon has raised more than £90 for a Welsh children’s hospice as part of a fitness-themed fundraiser held at an Abergavenny opticians.
Staff at Specsavers in Abergavenny took part in the event which saw team members cycle 101 miles on a static bike over one day in aid of Tŷ Hafan.
‘Inspired by the health kick many of us try to adopt at the start of the New Year, we set a challenge for the staff that would push them both physically and mentally,’ says Sejal Shah, Specsavers store director in Abergavenny.
‘As tough as the cycle-a-thon was for staff, knowing that their efforts were raising money for the families at Tŷ Hafan made it all worthwhile. The challenge was a fantastic success that saw customers, friends and members of the community give generously to a cause we are so proud to support.’
Specsavers announced its partnership with Tŷ Hafan in September 2016, kicking off the year-long commitment with a donation of £10,958 - the amount it costs the charity to provide a family with 24 hours of care.
The charity cares for life-limited children and young people, and provides vital support to their families, both within the hospice and through its community outreach programme.
Since 1999, it has supported 689 children across Wales, 263 of which are currently under its care.
