Specsavers Ilkley see the importance of Dementia Friends

The team at the Ilkley Specsavers has been accredited as ‘Dementia Friends’ after a session this week.

The opticians has a number of customers who are living with the disease, and staff felt the session helped them better understand how dementia can affect people, and in turn, helped them understand how to give an even better service.

Catering all customers

Roger Copley, store director at Ilkley Specsavers, comments: ‘I’m delighted the team were involved in this initiative.

At Specsavers we aim to meet all the needs of our customers and I feel the training session has hugely helped team members understand how dementia can affect people and how to give those who suffer appropriate service.’

Dementia Friendly organisation

Store manager, Sara Saunders, will meet with Alison Eagle, of Dementia Friendly Ilkley Action, to put together their action plan to achieve the additional status of becoming a ‘Dementia Friendly organisation’.

The accolade will be marked with other successful businesses during a celebration event on May 20.

This will coincide with National Dementia Friendly Awareness Week, and will also be attended also be Ilkley MP Kris Hopkins MP and Ilkley Parish Council chairman, Councillor Brian Mann.

The council is also working on its own action plan to become a Dementia Friendly organisation.
