A local retailer has been awarded a Civic Award for his contributions to Alnwick.

Grant Welsh, retail director at Specsavers on Bondgate, was presented with the accolade at Alnwick Town Mayor’s Award ceremony on 8 May.

The award recognises his support of and contribution to local organisations and groups in the town.

He has invested heavily in local groups since the store launched in 2017, including supporting Alnwick Bowling Club, Alnwick’s Bonfire Night celebrations, the Bailiffgate Museum and the Royal Air Force Air Cadets.

Proud winner

Grant, store director at Specsavers in Alnwick, said: ‘The award ceremony was a brilliant night, it was great to see so many local people being awarded for their amazing work in Alnwick.

‘I am honoured to be included in that list – I really appreciate the support since we opened the store. ‘It is vital to invest in the community and give back to local people, which is why Specsavers sponsors so many local organisations and groups in the town.’

Grant, who was born in Guidepost and brought up in Bedlington, returned to the North East to open the Alnwick store in 2017 after successfully completing the Specsavers’ Pathway programme.
