Specsavers Bicester audiologist, Prina Karia, has been crowned the Community Coach of the Year 2020 at the prestigious UK Coaching Awards.
Something to celebrate
Prina picked up the award at a virtual ceremony on Thursday 3 December. This year the awards recognised the contribution coaches had made in transforming lives in communities nationwide - especially against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic.
Combing full-time work with her love of badminton, Prina went into coaching after having a car accident and wanted to keep fit – she’s previously competed at county and international level in the sport. Today, she’s a Level 2 badminton coach and is particularly passionate about empowering people of all ages and backgrounds to try the sport. Her original academy in Leicestershire has seen exponential growth and she aims to do the same here in Oxfordshire.
A word from Prina
‘It’s been the first time that anyone coaching badminton has won the award so I feel like it has finally put badminton on the map alongside other sports,’ she comments. ‘There was serious competition, but to win the award from over 1,000,000 nominated national coaches is surreal.
‘Badminton has always been close to my heart because it gave me the strength to break the barriers and crush the stigma of BAME women in sport.’
A word from the store director About UK Coaching
‘We’re so proud of Prina, but not surprised she won as she truly is an inspiration,’ adds Specsavers Bicester store director, Sarah Marshall. ‘Her first-hand experience of the stigmas associated with women’s sport has made her even more determined to champion inclusivity - she’s a fantastic role model to those around her.’
