North Shields eyecare experts are championing a charitable recycling appeal.

The team from Specsavers in North Shields, together with Specsavers stores across the North East, collected and donated more than 44,000 pairs of old and unwanted glasses to charity Vision Aid Overseas in 2015.

Now staff at the store are again calling for donations of old and unwanted glasses.

A word from the store director

Edward O’Gara, store director at Specsavers in North Shields, said: ‘Our Vision Aid Overseas appeal has always been very popular with local residents.

‘By renewing our appeal, we hope to give donations an extra boost as people start to think about tackling the spring clean. Rather than have them gather dust at home, just pop your unwanted specs in our collection box in store.

‘It’s such a simple initiative but it can really make a positive change in people’s lives.’

More about the charity

Vision Aid Overseas is an international charity dedicated to fighting poverty by transforming access to eyecare in developing countries. After collecting specs through donations, the charity recycles them in an environmentally-friendly way, and the income generated from the recycling is used to support its programmes overseas.
