Slough opticians celebrates local specs wearer
A woman from Slough has fought off competition from thousands of specs wearers in the South East to be named a regional finalist in the Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition.
In with a chance of taking the top title
22-year-old Ellie Cross was announced as a finalist in the annual Specsavers competition and now stands a chance of attending the grand final in London in October, where hopefuls will compete for the chance to take home the top title, £10,000, a luxury holiday in the Bahamas and a wardrobe of specs to suit every style.
Waving the flag for specs wearers in the South East
Ellie celebrated becoming a regional finalist in the 16-24 age category by meeting the Specsavers team at her local store in Slough, where she was presented with a £150 glasses voucher, a bottle of Champagne and a certificate.
Ellie, who has worn glasses since the age of 12, said: ‘I was so shocked when I found out I’d been selected as a regional finalist.
‘One of my old work colleagues posted a link to the competition on my Facebook page and told me I should enter, but I never dreamed I’d get this far.
‘I love wearing my glasses and I feel bare without them, so getting this far in the competition is really exciting, and I’m pleased to be waving the flag for specs wearers across the South East.’
Crossing our fingers
Mark Williamson, store director at Specsavers in Slough, added: ‘On behalf of the team in Slough I’d like to congratulate Ellie on becoming a SWOTY regional finalist.
‘It’s great to see someone in the area being selected for the award, and we will have our fingers crossed for her throughout the rest of the competition.’
The Spectacle Wearer of the Year awards was launched by Girls Aloud singer and West End star Kimberley Walsh earlier this year. Glasses wearers were encouraged by Specsavers stores across the country to submit a picture of themselves in their best pair of specs.
Four age category finalists: 16-24; 25-39; 40-59 and 60+, a Facebook favourite voted for by the public and Ireland’s winner will attend the awards at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on Tuesday 7 October. All will win a VIP makeover, with one overall winner taking home the ultimate accolade in specs wearing.
The ultimate Spectacle Wearer of the Year winner will receive £10,000, plus a week’s holiday for two in the Bahamas courtesy of the Grand Lucayan Beach & Golf Resort and a wardrobe of specs to suit every style.
