Like all good movie franchises, the Silver Screenings at Strand Arts Centre return for a third instalment.

Proudly supported by Specsavers Connswater, weekly screenings of classic films for older audiences provide a wonderful social experience for the local community. And as Northern Ireland’s only remaining art deco picture house, the Strand is the perfect location for this trip down movie memory lane.

The Specsavers team are pleased to be on board for the third year running, with staff from the Connswater store dropping by for a chat with avid movie-goers, to discuss the importance of regular eye tests, the instore hearing test facilities and highlighting their Home Visits service.

A message from the Strand Arts Centre Chief Executive

Mimi Turtle said, ‘We are so grateful to Specsavers Connswater for helping us to keep this important community project going for a third consecutive year. It has been a thrill to meet so many local people and residents of supported housing and nursing homes, many of whom have fond memories of regular visits to the Strand in their youth.’

‘With the support of Specsavers, we plan to build on the success of Silver Screenings by taking it on the road into community venues later this year.’

Highlighting the importance of eye health

Lynsey Caldwell, Director at Specsavers Connswater, said: ‘The Specsavers Connswater team are delighted to be involved once again in Silver Screenings at the Strand. Over the last two years, we have met some real characters and are proud that this community event is providing not only a social opportunity for seniors, but we are on hand to share important information regarding looking after their eyesight.’

‘It’s great to see so many people benefit from this initiative, and we hope to see many of the Silver Screenings fans in our Connswater store soon.’

Classic films in the heart of East Belfast

Highlights of the new season include Some Like It Hot – an immersive and unmissable experience with a live jazz act warming up the crowd before the film begins.

Other classics such as the John Wayne western The Searchers, Dolly Parton’s cult hit 9 to 5, Dustin Hoffman comedy Tootsie, and tearjerker On Golden Pond starring Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn are also sure to please.

As well as all this, musical lovers will be delighted by The Band Wagon, The Pajama Game featuring Doris Day and Judy Garland in Meet Me in St. Louis.

All you need to know

Silver Screenings take place every Thursday at 2 pm, providing local seniors with an opportunity to meet up, interact and enjoy a classic film for only £3 (with a tea/coffee included).

With thanks to the Arts & Business NI Investment Programme, funding is available to help cover the cost of transport to and from the Strand Arts Centre for local community groups.
