Sights set on career development at Specsavers Clevedon
Two members of the team at Clevedon Specsavers are on track for rewarding careers in eyecare thanks to a national apprenticeship programme.
Specsavers Optical Apprenticeship programme
Maddie Naylor started on the Specsavers Optical Apprenticeship programme in store in July 2015 and will now be staying on as an optical assistant, supporting the team in delivering excellent eyecare for customers.
‘I didn’t know what to expect when I first started my apprenticeship, but I’ve found it really useful to have the support of the team and dedicated time each week to study,’ said 20-year-old Maddie. ‘I’ve really enjoyed my first year in store and am thrilled to be staying on with the team as I complete my Cert 3 training.’
Chrissie Gravell also started out as an apprentice at the store and, having completed her Cert 3 and Cert 4 qualifications, will now begin her final year of the dispensing optician diploma course to become a qualified dispensing optician.
Emma Perrigo, store director, is full of praise: ‘Our customers are at the heart of what we do and we pride ourselves on ensuring our team is able to offer the very best service. Apprenticeships are a great way of doing that and we’ve seen with Chrissie and Maddie how useful the programme can be in getting them started on a career in optics. They’ve become valuable members of the team during their apprenticeships and we’re really proud that they’ve chosen to complete further levels of their training with us.’
With more than 240 people enrolled on the scheme, the Specsavers Optical Apprenticeship is the UK’s largest government-accredited programme and includes the completion of the Level 2 Diploma in Optics. More than 90% of apprentices take on full-time positions within the company, opening up further training opportunities and the potential to qualify as a dispensing optician within five years.
